TITLE

   AmiWeb2c 2.1

AUTHOR

AmiWeb2c 2.1 was created by Andreas Scherer on the basis of
Web2c 7.2 as maintained by Olaf Weber, who took over from Karl
Berry, who collected stuff from Donald E. Knuth, Oren Patashnik,
Tomas G. Rokicki, John D. Hobby, Peter Breitenlohner and Philip
Taylor, Han The Thanh, Yannis Haralambous and John Plaice, and
others. Most of the "drivers" coming with AmiWeb2c are currently
maintained for the Web2c environment by Sebastian P. Q. Rahtz.

Please report bugs to the maintainer of AmiWeb2c and not to
these other people, who can't be of any help with the Amiga
(well, except Tomas Rokicki of course, who started the whole
thing in the first place :-)

MAINTAINER

It is with regret that I (Andreas Scherer) step down as maintainer
of AmiWeb2c. However, Jim Cooper <jamie@interpath.com> has stepped
forward to take over the task of coordinating the future development
of "TeX and friends" on the Amiga. I thank him very much and wish
him good luck for this endeavour.

DESCRIPTION

AmiWeb2c 2.1 is the native Amiga port of the complete Web2c 7.2
system of Unix-TeX (with the exception of the (o)xdvi previewer and
some of the Unix-ish scripts and the necessity to use a tool like
DOSPrefs). Detailed information is provided in the archive and
from common TeX resources like the CTAN (see below). As a starter
you may want to check out http://www.tug.org.

AmiWeb2c 2.1 is the successor of my AmiWeb2C system (note the
capital C) released in May 1995. Virtually everything is new
and reworked and lots of new material has been added.

NEW FEATURES

AmiWeb2c 2.1 fixes several bugs found in both the basic Web2c system
and the former AmiWeb2c 2.0 since its release in February 1997.

The directory structure of AmiWeb2c 2.0 is changed in preparation of
the "TeX Live CD" distribution (see http://www.tug.org/texlive.html
for details). People who update from version 2.0 should read the
relevant section in README.amiweb2c very carefully.

Several variants of TeX, i.e., "e-TeX", "PDFTeX", and "Omega", are
   now integral parts of (Ami)Web2c.

New utilities like gsftopk(k), makeindex(k), and ps2pk(m) are coming
   with the standard (Ami)Web2c distribution.

The documentation is revised to clarify several things. AmigaGuide
versions of the original Texinfo documentation for Kpathsea, DVIPS,
   and Web2c are added.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

I made no attempt to change the internal settings of any programs
of Web2c 7.2, so you'll need quite a lot of system resources to run
AmiWeb2c 2.1. Although the binaries should work on any processor
starting with the 68000, use of an accelerator board is highly
recommended. At least 4 MB of RAM (and there are those who believe
that doubling this would be a more appropriate estimate) are required
for the large programs to run. I never tried any part of AmiWeb2c 2.1
on version 1.3 of the operating system.

AVAILABILITY

The major resource for TeXnical material is the so-called CTAN
(Comprehensive TeX Archive Network). For me this is the German
node at ftp://ftp.dante.de. More information about this service
and its mirrors is available there. Please consider supporting
CTAN and TeX by joining either the international TeX Users Group
(TUG) or one of the national TeX Users Groups.

AmiWeb2c 2.1 is located in the directory

      ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/systems/amiga/amiweb2c/

The same distribution is available on the Aminet in the
   text/tex/ directory.

PRICE

Despite of all the work that has gone into the development of
AmiWeb2c it is free of charge. Moreover, you are entitled to
free installation support for "AmiWeb2c 2.1" as distributed
through CTAN and/or Aminet via e-mail and/or (at your expenses)
snail mail by registering through the submission of a picture
postcard of your hometown to me. No general help with TeXnical
   questions is granted.

DISTRIBUTABILITY

AmiWeb2c is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify
it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published
by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License,
or (at your option) any later version.

A copy of the GNU General Public License version 2 is coming
   along with AmiWeb2c.

Have fun!
